Cal Poly University Projects for Borgo Abruzzo

September 17, 2014

Student of the California Polytechnic State University Rome Program in Architecture spent several days in Castelvecchio Calvisio studying the urban infrastructure and fabric.  In a brief charette they came up with interesting proposals to fill the voids left in the borgo.

Program Brief: urban surgery in Castelvecchio Calvisio.

You will be assigned three urban voids in the dense historic village of Castelvecchio Calvisio, voids left by collapse or demolition. Three teams will be formed, one for each site.

After examining the void in the context of the village and forming an attitude about relaunching the town’s economy.

Through a combination of indoor, semi-enclosed and outdoor spaces you will create a small, low-cost “spontaneous intervention” to provide for one of the following:

  • artisan workshop and retail space
  • info-point for eco tourism business (i.e. tour operator, cultural itineraries, etc.)

Consider these “pop-ups” that will last a limited time and can be disassembled after a few seasons. You will need to provide access to upper levels via stairs; it will be impossible in most cases to provide full accessibility.

Stakeholders
The project will serve visitors to Castelvecchio and provide employment to local residents.
